Early approaches to performance review

There have been two prevalent approaches to performance review.

The first performance review approach has been primarily concerned with an employees past performance.

The second approach to performance review has been focussed on development. This performance review approach viewed the employees as individuals and has been forward looking through the use of goal setting.

However both performance review approaches are not without their difficulties. Which is why modern approaches to performance review takes a much more strategic posture to link personal development with organisational development and continuous improvement measures. But more of this later.
